Pride Behind The Ride

The story starts many years ago when he was just a young boy, around nine years old. At the time, he used to help sell chickens from the back of a bakkie very similar to this one. What may have seemed like a simple childhood experience at the time would unknowingly leave a lasting impression on him. It became one of his earliest memories of working and hustling as a kid — what he jokingly refers to as his very first job.

The Beginning of the Journey

Like many enthusiasts in the early 2000s, the first obsession wasn’t necessarily performance or body styling — it was sound. During that era, car audio culture was exploding, and massive bass systems, custom installs, and boot builds were dominating the scene.

The coupe first entered the family in 2001, during one of the most influential periods in global car culture. The early 2000s tuning scene was exploding worldwide, and the release of The Fast and the Furious transformed the way enthusiasts viewed Hondas forever. Suddenly, Civics were no longer seen as simple economy cars — they became icons of street culture.

It started with a Nissan 1400 — a 1996 model that had already lived through one chapter before finding its way to its second owner. To most, it was just another old bakkie.

To her, it was potential.

The Beginning: A Breakdown That Sparked a Build

The journey began in 2023 when the original 2.5 diesel engine developed a bearing knock. Instead of simply repairing it, the decision was made to strip the vehicle down completely and tackle years of wear—especially rust that had taken hold across the body.

The Heart of the Build: AUM 20VT Done Right

At the core of this build sat a stock AUM 20VT small port motor, imported as a drop-in from Motors and More. No exotic bottom-end work, no over-the-top internal modifications—just a solid platform that proves how capable these engines are when paired with the right supporting hardware.

The journey began in Gauteng, where he eventually found the truck that matched his vision. It wasn’t registered and was far from perfect, but potential outweighed condition. He transported it back to Prieska in the Northern Cape, where the real transformation would take place.

A First of Its Kind in South Africa

This isn’t just another restored classic—it’s a milestone build. By integrating a fully custom 4-link suspension paired with bespoke air struts, this project becomes the first Datsun GX Coupé on air in South Africa. The setup allows the car to sit aggressively low when parked, yet remain fully functional and adjustable on the road—a perfect blend of stance culture and drivability.
