Some builds are bought. Some are assembled. And then there are builds like “Betty” — a machine shaped by vision, persistence, and pure hands-on craftsmanship. This isn’t just a restored classic or a modified pickup. It’s a ground-up reimagining of what a vintage workhorse can become when modern engineering meets old-school grit.
A Classic Face with a Modern Foundation
At first glance, Betty wears the unmistakable character of a 1964 Bedford cab — all vintage charm, squared lines, and unmistakable presence. But beneath that nostalgic exterior lies something entirely different.
The body sits on a Mitsubishi Triton chassis, blending old-school design with modern drivability. This hybrid approach didn’t just improve performance — it made the build functional, reliable, and capable of handling serious power.
To perfect the stance, the rear diff was repositioned above the leaf springs, dropping the rear end and giving Betty that aggressive, planted look every custom builder chases.
Engineering Around Limitations
Fitting modern components into a compact vintage cab is never simple — and Betty was no exception.
To make space for the drivetrain and improve comfort:
- The gearbox tunnel was completely rebuilt to house a 4-speed automatic transmission
- The firewall was pushed forward by 140mm on both sides to increase legroom
- The front shock towers were relocated into the engine bay, requiring significant body modification to accommodate coilovers
These weren’t bolt-on upgrades — they were calculated structural changes that reshaped the truck from the inside out.
Modern Comfort Meets Vintage Steel
Inside, Betty surprises again.
The cabin features seats and a centre console from an Audi Q2, bringing modern comfort and ergonomics into a cab that was never designed for it. The result? A driving experience that feels far removed from its 1960s origins.
Wide, Low, and Unmistakable
Betty’s stance is impossible to ignore.
- 20-inch steel wheels give it that raw, industrial feel
- Massive 315 tyres at the rear and 265 up front create a muscular footprint
- Custom spacers — initially 100mm, later refined to 60mm — were built to dial in the perfect width
Every angle of the truck screams intention.
Handcrafted Bodywork – A First Project Done Right
What makes this build even more impressive? This was the builder’s first full project.
Every inch of Betty’s exterior was shaped by hand:
- Custom front bumper redesign
- Reworked wheel arches front and rear
- Fully rebuilt front fenders for a unique profile
- Custom side skirts fabricated using 220mm mild steel lip channel
Even the paint is personal — a one-of-a-kind custom-mixed colour, created specifically for this build. No off-the-shelf shade. No shortcuts.
And the details don’t stop there.
The fuel filler? Hidden beneath the wooden load bed, keeping the exterior clean and uncluttered — a small but thoughtful design choice that adds to the truck’s custom identity.
Built, Not Bought
Powering Betty is a 5.7L LS1 V8, paired with a 4-speed automatic gearbox — a combination known for reliability, power, and tuning potential. It transforms this once-humble pickup into something far more aggressive and performance-driven.
But perhaps the most impressive part of the build isn’t the engine — it’s how it came together.
Over the course of 16 months, the builder didn’t just assemble Betty — he created the tools needed to build her:
- A custom bending machine
- Handmade sheet metal shaping tools
This wasn’t just a project. It was a learning curve, a challenge, and ultimately, a personal achievement forged in steel.
The Soul of “Betty”
Nicknamed Betty, this pickup carries more than just parts — it carries a story.
It’s the story of:
- A first-time builder taking on a full custom project
- Solving problems with creativity instead of convenience
- Blending eras, styles, and engineering into one cohesive machine
Betty isn’t perfect — the hidden fuel setup still needs finishing — but that’s part of what makes her real. She’s not a showroom queen built by a team of professionals. She’s a hands-on, garage-built masterpiece.
And that’s exactly why she stands out.
